Description

Shasta Gold® is a recently-released mandarin variety developed within the University of California Riverside citrus breeding program. This high yielding variety grows well in containers and in the home garden in southern zones. The 3″ fruit has a dark orange, relatively thin rind. The flesh is seedless with a juicy, rich, sweet flavor. Indoor growing temperature should not go below 50° F. Protect from frost.

Latin Name: Citrus reticulata ‘Shasta Gold’
Site and Soil: Well-draining soil, prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH. Plant in a location with full sun exposure.
Bearing age: Will produce fruit right away
Rootstock: Our 1-gallon citrus plants are grafted onto Flying Dragon rootstock, a cold-hardy and ultra-dwarfing rootstock, 5-8 feet when mature. All other sizes of citrus are grafted onto c-35, another dwarfing rootstock that is a little more vigorous than Flying Dragon.
Size at Maturity: 5-8 feet when grown in a pot, 10-12 feet when grown in the ground
Bloom time: Spring
Pollination Requirement: Generally self-pollinating, but planting multiple trees may increase fruit production.
Ripening Time: Late fall to early winter
Yield: Moderate to high, depending on care and growing conditions.
Pests and Diseases: Susceptible to aphids, scale, and citrus diseases. Regular monitoring and appropriate treatments are recommended.
