After the citrus groves in the provinces of Hubei and Sichuan were decimated by a bitter freeze in the early 90’s graduate student Dr. Huang retrieved what was left alive. In some cases only branches were left standing. These branches showed the best cold hardiness and because of this they were brought back to the US for further evaluation. China Satsuma S-6 is one of those specimens. Because of its fruit quality, vigor and cold hardiness this variety is an excellent addition to any citrus collection or for those attempting to overwinter citrus outdoors in colder climates.
