The bare roots are by far the most established roots that I have ever seen on a bareroot tree.

Description

Duke is the blueberry for people who want to start picking early and keep those berries in good condition after they come off the bush.

It ripens near the beginning of the northern highbush season, yet its flowers open relatively late. The berries are firm and their flavor holds unusually well in storage, making Duke especially useful for families who pick more than they eat in a day or two.

The flavor is mild and clean rather than intensely aromatic. Pick the berries fully ripe and Duke gives you pleasant fruit that travels, refrigerates and freezes exceptionally well.

Planting & Care – Duke Blueberry

Site & Soil

Start with acidic soil. Blueberries do best around pH 4.5 to 5.5 with excellent drainage and plenty of organic matter. A raised bed or large container is often easiest where native soil is alkaline or heavy.

Watering & Mulch

Blueberry roots are shallow. Mulch well and keep moisture steady through flowering, fruiting and summer heat without leaving the root zone saturated.

Feeding

Feed lightly in spring with fertilizer made for acid-loving plants. Avoid heavy fertilizer applications, especially on young plants.

Pruning

Once established, remove weak twiggy growth and a portion of the oldest canes each winter so vigorous younger wood keeps replacing them.

Harvest

Let berries become fully blue and taste them before stripping the bush. Duke’s mild flavor is best when the fruit is completely ripe.
