Fig Tree (Petite Negra)

★★★★★★★★★★ 4.8 (37 reviews)

Price range: $29.99 through $69.99

Petite Negra is a naturally compact fig that stays a tidy 3 to 4 ft without any pruning, at home on a patio, deck, or in a large container. Its black skinned fruit ripens to sweet, deep red flesh with a rich, juicy bite.

  • Two crops a year: a substantial early crop, then a smaller late one.
  • Self-fertile and parthenocarpic; no pollinator or fig wasp required.
  • Holds its small size on its own, with no annual cutting back.
  • Well suited to container culture or a small, sunny garden.
  • Full sun brings out its best flavor and ripens fruit fully.

Boxed perfect. Shipped on time. Excellent quality stock. About the only thing you could do to improve my experience would be to fly out to Maine and plant them for me.

Don, Maine

The packaging for those kiwis was brilliant and by far the best packaging job out of any place I ordered from this year. Your Annas are tough as nails.

Description

Petite Negra is a naturally compact fig, holding a tidy 3 to 4 ft without any cutting back, which makes it an easy fit for a patio, deck, or large container. Its fruit ripens to a near black skin over sweet, juicy, deep red flesh.

The tree carries two crops each year. The early crop, on last year’s wood, produces the larger and more rewarding fruit, while a smaller second crop follows later on new growth.

Overview

  • Naturally compact size, no pruning required to stay small.
  • Black skin, deep red flesh, sweet and juicy.
  • Two crops yearly: a substantial early one, then a lighter late one.
  • Self-fertile and parthenocarpic; no pollinator or fig wasp needed.
  • Well suited to containers, patios, and small gardens.

Growing Details

Latin Name: Ficus carica ‘Petite Negra’
Site and Soil: Full sun; well drained soil, ideally against a south or west wall
Hardiness: Root hardy well past the point where top growth is killed by cold
Rootstock: Grown from tissue culture
Bearing Age: 1 to 2 years after planting
Size at Maturity: Naturally compact, 3 to 4 ft without pruning
Ripening Time: Early season; June into July, its more productive crop
Pollination: Self-fertile and parthenocarpic; no pollinator or fig wasp needed

Additional Notes

  • Grower’s Insight: Its early crop is the one to savor: the fruit runs far larger than the smaller late crop from the same plant.
  • Regional Insight: Because it stays naturally small, Petite Negra suits patios and small yards nationwide, easily moved under cover for winter in colder regions.

Planting & Care – Petite Negra Fig

Site Selection

  • Choose the sunniest spot available for the best fruit.
  • A patio or deck suits its naturally compact size well.

Soil Preparation

  • Well drained soil is essential; avoid soggy ground.
  • In containers, use a quality, well draining potting mix.

Planting Instructions

  1. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball.
  2. Set the tree at the same depth it grew in the pot.
  3. Backfill and water deeply to settle the soil.
  4. For containers, choose a pot with generous drainage holes.

Watering & Fertilizing

  • Water regularly through the first two growing seasons.
  • Container plants dry out faster; check soil often.
  • Feed lightly in spring with a balanced fertilizer.

Pruning & Training

  • Little pruning is needed; it holds its size naturally.
  • Remove dead or crossing wood in late winter.
  • Wear sleeves when pruning; the sap can irritate skin.

Harvest & Use

  • Harvest the early crop once fruit softens and droops.
  • A smaller second crop follows later in the season.
  • Enjoy fresh, or dried for year round use.

Container Growing

  • A half whiskey barrel or similar large pot suits it well.
  • Bring containers into a garage or covered spot for winter in cold regions.
