Chinotto Sour Orange

Chinotto is the small Italian sour orange behind Chinotto soda, the Slow Food-protected candied chinotti of Savona, and much of the aromatic bitterness in Italian amari including Campari. The fruit is intensely tart and aromatic, prized for marmalades, syrups, bitters, and beverages rather than fresh eating; the tree itself is a compact thornless dwarf whose small dark-green myrtle-like leaves give it as much ornamental presence as the bright orange winter fruit.
