I have been buying from your nursery for years, and hands down your citrus has survived the best out of all of my sources. I have never lost a plant in my colder climate.

Returning customer

Absolutely beautiful trees, especially compared to some of the other mail order bare roots I have gotten from other companies.

Website customer

The plants look beautiful and healthy. I was impressed by the size and strength of the 3-Cherry Tree.

Description

Nikita’s Gift is a hybrid persimmon developed by crossing Asian persimmon (Diospyros kaki) with American persimmon (Diospyros virginiana). The result is a unique tree that bridges the gap between the two species—offering Asian-style fruit with improved cold tolerance and adaptability.

The fruit is larger and smoother than most American persimmons and ripens to a deep orange-red. Like astringent Asian persimmons, Nikita’s Gift must fully soften before eating. When properly ripe, the fruit becomes rich and sweet, with the tannins fully resolved.

Nikita’s Gift is valued for its ability to ripen fruit in regions that are marginal for traditional Asian persimmons. Grafted onto American persimmon seedling rootstock, it forms a resilient tree well suited to growers seeking improved cold hardiness without sacrificing fruit quality.

Overview

  • Hybrid of Asian and American persimmon.
  • Astringent until fully soft and ripe.
  • Larger, smoother fruit than most American persimmons.
  • Improved cold tolerance over Asian persimmons.
  • Well suited to regions with cooler winters.

This is a great persimmon. Mine was LOADED with fruit this past season — just 3-4 years after planting. Mine is already 12 feet tall and I’m going to have to keep it pruned to maintain the height. I have no doubt that this tree would exceed 20 feet in height without pruning. The fruit ripens late in central Ohio. It tastes best if I can leave them on the tree until December. I do like the look of the tree when it has fruit and no leaves. The only things for me that keep this from a 5-star rating are the late-ripening fruit and the height being larger than expected.

Purchased in a 1 gallon container. Healthy small tree. I up potted it into a 5 gallon pot immediately with fast draining soil. Looking good so far, can’t wait to get fruit.
