Description

Ubileen is one of the finest early-season European pears, ripening weeks ahead of Bartlett while delivering exceptional sweetness, juiciness, and silky texture. Bred in Bulgaria, this variety is known for large, attractive fruit with smooth yellow skin and a subtle red blush when exposed to sun.

The flavor is rich and sweet with very little acidity—one of the best pears for fresh eating early in the season. Ubileen performs well in both warm and cool-summer climates and is prized for its consistent crops, fast ripening, and excellent early-market appeal.

Grafted onto a semi-dwarfing rootstock, Ubileen grows into a compact, manageable tree ideal for home orchards. It is not self-fertile and requires another European pear such as Bartlett, Anjou, Orcas, or Summercrisp for pollination.

Planting & Care – Ubileen Pear

Site Selection

  • Thrives in both warm and cool summer climates.
  • Ideal for growers wanting the earliest possible pear harvest.
  • Prefers 1/2 day to full day of sun for maximum sweetness.

Soil Preparation

  • Prefers well-drained soil; avoid standing water.
  • Improve poor soils with compost or organic matter.
  • Optimal soil pH: 6.0–7.0.

Planting Instructions

  1. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball.
  2. Plant at the same depth it grew in the nursery.
  3. Backfill with native soil and water thoroughly.
  4. Mulch 2–3″ deep, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Watering & Fertilizing

  • Deep water 1–2 times weekly in normal weather; 2–3 times weekly in heat.
  • Once established, water every 7–14 days during dry periods.
  • Medium feeder: fertilize lightly in early spring if growth is weak.

Pollination

  • Requires another European pear for pollination.
  • Best partners include Bartlett, Anjou, Orcas, and Summercrisp.
  • Plant the pollinator within 20–30 feet for optimal fruit set.

Pruning & Training

  • Train to a central or modified central leader.
  • Prune lightly—Ubileen bears heavily and doesn’t need aggressive shaping.
