Description

Bearss Seedless Lime—also known as Persian or Tahiti lime—is the standard lime used in kitchens around the world. The fruit is larger and juicier than Key lime, with a clean, tart flavor that works beautifully for drinks, marinades, sauces, and everyday cooking.

What sets Bearss apart is its reliable seedlessness, a result of its triploid genetics. Trees are productive and adaptable, producing fruit that is commonly harvested green but will turn yellow if left to fully ripen.

Overview

  • Classic Persian/Tahiti lime with bright acidity.
  • Typically seedless with excellent juice content.
  • More cold tolerant than Key lime.
  • Productive and adaptable to container growing.
  • Self-fertile.

Growing Details

Latin Name: Citrus × latifolia
Site and Soil: Full sun; well-drained soil
Rootstock: 1-gallon trees on Flying Dragon; larger sizes on C-35
Hardiness: More cold tolerant than Mexican/Key lime; mature trees may tolerate brief dips to approximately 28°F with protection
Bearing Age: Often fruits immediately; grafted trees may produce in their first season
Size at Maturity:
Flying Dragon: Typically 6–8 ft tall and wide
C-35: Typically 10–12 ft tall and wide
Note: Trees grown in containers remain smaller and are easily maintained with pruning.
Bloom Time: Spring, with additional blooms in warm climates
Ripening Time: Late winter through spring; may carry fruit at other times in mild regions
Pollination Requirements: Self-fertile
Seed Content: Typically seedless
Pests & Diseases: Similar to other citrus; good airflow and drainage reduce issues

Additional Notes

  • Grower’s Insight: Bearss limes are triploid, which is why they stay reliably seedless—this is a genetic trait, not a marketing term.
  • Regional Insight: Performs best where lemons grow well; container culture allows success in cooler climates with winter protection.

Planting & Care – Bearss Seedless Lime

Site Selection

  • Choose a sunny, warm location for best fruit quality.
  • Sheltered microclimates improve cold performance.
  • Good air circulation supports healthy growth.

Soil Preparation (In-Ground vs Container)

  • In-ground: Excellent drainage is essential; raised planting helps in heavier soils.
  • In-ground: Slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5) supports nutrient uptake.
  • Container: Use a fast-draining citrus mix in a container with drainage holes.
  • Container: Containers allow easy protection in cooler climates.

Planting Instructions

  1. Dig a hole about twice the width of the root ball, or choose a container slightly larger than the root mass.
  2. Set the tree so the root flare sits at or slightly above finished soil or potting mix.
  3. Backfill gently and water thoroughly.
  4. Mulch lightly for in-ground trees, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Watering (In-Ground vs Container)

  • In-ground, establishment: Keep soil evenly moist during the first growing season.
  • In-ground, established: Deep, periodic watering supports steady fruiting.
  • Simple check: Water when soil is dry 3–6″ below the surface.
  • Container: Water thoroughly, then allow the top couple inches of mix to dry.

Fertilizing

  • Bearss limes are heavy feeders and respond well to consistent nutrition.
  • Base feeding: Apply slow-release citrus fertilizer in early spring and again in early summer.
  • Support feeding: Supplemental liquid feeding during active growth promotes flowering and fruit set.
  • Reduce feeding later in the season to help the tree harden before winter.

Cold Care

  • Protect during freezing weather, especially when young.
  • Container trees can be moved to sheltered locations during cold snaps.

Pruning & Harvest

  • Light pruning maintains shape and airflow.
  • Harvest fruit green for classic lime flavor or allow to yellow for milder acidity.

General Tips

  • This is the most versatile lime for everyday use.
  • Excellent choice for home growers wanting seedless fruit.

  1. Diane Edgekoski

We bought our Lime in June and it had 3-4 limes on it. They turned out to be very juicy and tasted great. The tree has just bloomed again and was covered in blossoms. I can’t wait to watch them grow. We have a lemon tree with a bunch of lemons that are getting close to harvesting. We also have to Satsuma orange trees that have 4-5 fruits growing. This is a wonderful place to buy your fruit trees. We’ll be back to buy more the next time we’re in the area. They’d make great Christmas gifts.

  2. Kate N.

Purchased a lime tree last year, it was just a skinny little thing, this year it is branching out, blooming, and fruiting. It smells so much better than a store bought lime. wow, huge difference. It is so fragrant!
