Additional Notes

  • Grower’s Insight: Bluegold is known for setting extremely heavy crops. Proper annual pruning keeps berry size strong and prevents the plant from overbearing, which helps maintain fruit quality long term.
  • Regional Insight: Performs especially well in cooler northern climates, including the Pacific Northwest and Upper Midwest. In lower-chill or very hot regions, production may be reduced.
  • Because blueberries require acidic soil, gardeners in neutral or alkaline areas often see dramatically better results when planting in amended beds or large containers with acidified mix.

Planting & Care – Bluegold Blueberry

Site Selection

Plant in a location receiving at least 1/2 day to full sun. In hotter climates, light afternoon shade can help reduce stress.

Soil Requirements

Blueberries require acidic soil with an ideal pH between 4.5 and 5.5. If your native soil is neutral or alkaline, amend heavily with peat, pine bark fines, or plant in raised beds or containers using an acidic mix.

Planting

Plant at the same depth as the nursery container. Space bushes approximately 3–5 feet apart. Apply 2–4 inches of pine bark or wood chip mulch immediately after planting to conserve moisture and protect the shallow root system.

Watering

Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Blueberries have shallow roots and are sensitive to drought stress, especially during flowering and fruit development.

Pruning

Prune annually during dormancy. Remove older canes and thin crowded growth to maintain airflow and encourage strong new fruiting wood. Bluegold in particular benefits from consistent pruning due to its heavy fruit set.

Harvest

Berries ripen mid-season. Allow fruit to fully blue on the bush for maximum sweetness before harvesting.
