Cornelian Cherry (Red Star)

Red Star bears good crops of large, 1-1/4″ long, oval fruit. The glossy, dark red fruit has an appealing sweet-tart flavor and is reminiscent of cherry or wild plum. Native to Ukraine, this plant grows as a shrub or tree. Flowers hold ornamental value as a dogwood it blooms early in March. Hardy to zone 4, fruit ripens late August- early September. Requires cross pollination from another variety, such as yellow cornelian cherry.
