Description

Mojo Berry® is a compact, fruiting mulberry developed specifically for gardeners who want real mulberries without a full-size tree. Unlike standard mulberries that quickly outgrow small spaces, Mojo Berry® stays remarkably dwarf, making it well suited to containers, patios, borders, and small gardens.

This variety was originally developed by Japanese breeder Hajime Matsunaga and is botanically classified as Morus rotundiloba. It is also known under the name ’Charlotte Russe’ in some markets. Mojo Berry® gained international recognition after being named RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year in 2017—an acknowledgment of both its ornamental appeal and its unique fruiting habit.

Under good conditions, Mojo Berry® is known for fruiting at a young age and for producing berries over a longer window than most mulberries. Fruit ripens red before turning black when fully ripe, and plants may set fruit on both older wood and new growth—helping explain the extended harvest period reported by many growers.

In real-world growing, Mojo Berry® lives up to its reputation for staying small. Even when planted in the ground, it maintains a compact stature compared to traditional mulberries, and in containers it remains especially well behaved with minimal pruning.

Planting & Care – Mojo Berry® Mulberry

Site Selection

  • Provide as much sun as possible for consistent fruiting.
  • Containers should be placed where light exposure is maximized.
  • Allow space for airflow and access for harvesting.

Soil Preparation

  • Use well-drained soil or a high-quality potting mix for containers.
  • Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils.
  • A soil pH of roughly 6.0–7.5 is suitable.

Planting Instructions

  • Plant at the same depth as it was growing in its pot.
  • Set the root flare at or just above soil level.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.
  • Mulch lightly if planted in ground, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Watering & Fertilizing

  • Water consistently during establishment.
  • Containers should be watered when the top inch of soil dries.
  • Fertilize lightly; excessive nitrogen encourages leaf growth over fruit.

Pruning & Size Management

  • Minimal pruning is needed—Mojo Berry® naturally stays compact.
  • Light dormant pruning helps maintain shape.
  • Tip pruning can keep container plants tidy.

Harvest & Use

  • Harvest berries when fully black and soft.
  • Pick regularly during the season as fruit ripens.
  • Excellent fresh, frozen, or used in jams and baking.

General Tips

  • Flavor improves as the plant matures.
  • Protect container plants from extreme cold in winter.
  • Birds enjoy mulberries—netting may help preserve harvests.
